Boomi ry's 55th
annual ball

Graphic design

On this page I will go through the project in more detail and you can find some of the materials that I made for the event.

Creating the visual identity

I started the project by collecting inspiration from Pinterest and found the main color palette for the identity: Blue and gold.

I started creating the visual identity from the logo of the main event. I decided to go with a golden logo with a bit of asymmetry with the numbers being on different levels and the name of the organization on the other side of the numbers.

In the previous year's annual balls, the theme has been some kind of florals. It was clear to me that I wanted to go a different way. This is why I ended up choosing a painting-like theme with blue watercolor backgrounds and gold details.

The final visual identity of the annual ball can be seen here.

Social media materials

For social media there was a need for marketing materials as well as illustration for informative posts. The materials ranged from event banners to seating charts.

For these materials I mainly used Canva.

Print materials

For the ball we needed some prints for which I created the fitting materials. These materials included photo wall backgrounds, booklets for the participants, table numbers and much more.

These materials were a bit more complicated to create so I used Adobe's InDesign and Illustrator.

You can flip through the final results here.

Visual identity for the event week

Before the main event, there was a week of events from Monday to Thursday. I wanted the banners of these events to have similar visual identity. When creating the identity for these events, I wanted to make sure that they are very simple and don't take the spotlight off from the main event, the ball.

I chose a similar theme for the this, just with different colors to represent different events. Here are the final results.

Day party (Sillis)

For the Sillis party after the ball I made a photo wall, photo wall car prop and a student overall badge.

The theme for this party was mid-life-crisis and I got the brief for the materials from the team planning the event. They wanted dessert road scenery with a Route 55 -road sign and and of course the name of the event and the sponsors needed to be included. For the overall badge they wanted a red old style sports car with overly big registration plate with our organizations name and age in it.

For all materials I used Adobe Illustrator.

Social media templates

From all of the weeks events and the main events, ball and Sillis, there were posts on our student organizations Instagram story. For these story posts I made templates that my team could use when posting from the events. This tied the posts nicely to each event.

For the templates I used Canva. I created templates for video and still photo posts. All my team had to do while posting, was to add the photo or video to the Canva template and then download and post.

You can see some of the final posts here. Some of them are screenshots from videos so they may be a bit blurry.

GIFs

For the ball and Sillis I made also GIFs for the participants to use when posting from the events. This was also a great visibility hack.

I haven't made GIFs before so this was a great learning opportunity. I ended up using Canva to make te videos from which I edited the background off with Adobe's AfterEffects. Then finally I uploaded the transparent background videos to Media Encoder to change the format to gif video.

The GIFs can be found on Instagram and SnapChat using the tag boomi55.
